West Village Family & Grad Student Housing, Phase 2

Project Overview

Phase 2  of the Family and Graduate Housing Replacement in the West Village will include replacing the existing 100 and 700 Courts on Sunnyside Avenue. The buildings currently used to house graduate and family students are more than 50 years old, do not meet seismic requirements and have regular utility infrastructure failures. There continues to be a high demand for housing that provides close proximity to campus amenities, classrooms, and labs. The West Village Housing Replacement will allow the University of Utah to continue to provide this resource that has contributed to so many students’ success.

Project Timeline

  • Construction for this project will being in August 2023
  • Construction will be completed in January 2026

Impacts of Utility Work on East Sunnyside Ave

Starting on July 8, 2024, construction will begin to connect University of Utah family and graduate housing units to Salt Lake City’s storm water system, water line, and sewer system. During this time, traffic will be impacted on East Sunnyside Avenue for a period of approximately 11 weeks.

During construction, one lane of traffic will be open in either direction. Cones and signage will alert travelers to the work being done. There will be no parking along either side of Sunnyside Avenue, as the parking lane will be used for traffic flow.

For the duration of the construction, the UTA bus stop within the construction zone will be closed. Campus shuttle stops will also be closed within the construction zone; the easternmost stop along Sunnyside Avenue will remain open.

The construction will be conducted in three distinct phases to minimize disruptions as much as possible. No weekend construction is expected.

Phase 1 (Approximately 2-3 weeks from July 8, 2024)
Area impacted: Sunnyside Avenue between 1800 East and 2000 East

Phase 2 (Approximately 6 weeks beginning in late July or early August)
Area impacted: Sunnyside Avenue between 1900 East and Foothill Boulevard

Phase 3 (Approximately 2 weeks beginning in September)
Area impacted: Sidewalk on the north side of Sunnyside Avenue above 2000 East. Sunnyside Avenue will reopen to traffic, but the sidewalk will remain closed.
